Lincoln is serving as a pit stop along this year’s Biking Across Kansas tour route in mid-June.

An annual, eight-day event, the tour attracts bicyclists from all over the country, introducing them to the beauty of rural Kansas and the hospitality found in the small towns and people they meet along the way.

This year’s event, scheduled from June 10-17, begins at the Kansas/Colorado border west of Tribune. The tour, which will make its way from town to town, also features overnight stops in Tribune, Dighton, WaKeeney, Plainville, Lincoln, Chapman, Rossville and Tonganoxie.

Local high school gymnasiums and school grounds serve as a place for tired riders to shower, repair their bikes, eat and sleep. All the cyclists’ gear is carried from town to town by trucks, so riders bring sleeping bags and several changes of clothing. About half of the participants bring tents and camp out while the other half stays indoors.

On June 13, cyclists will log 69 miles from Plainville to Lincoln. The next day, the tour heads to Chapman – about 72 miles away.
